The Woman Behind the Power: Get to Know Aryna Sabalenka’s Mother
When Aryna Sabalenka captured her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January, fans saw sheer elation from the powerful Belarusian. But the woman cheering loudest from the player’s box was her 53-year-old mother, Yulia.
In tennis circles, Yulia Sabalenka is a familiar face. A former professional handball player, she has been her daughter’s biggest supporter and driving force since the very beginning. Their bond is unbreakable.
“My mom is everything to me,” Aryna says. “She’s my role model, my motivation, my friend. I wouldn’t be the player or person I am today without her.”
Yulia started coaching Aryna in tennis at age 6 and saw immense potential. She worked multiple jobs to fund her daughter’s training. Early on she instilled in Aryna the fighting spirit and steely determination that defines her brand of power tennis.
Whenever Aryna’s fiery temper flares up on court, mom is there to calmly talk her down. “Yulia is the rock that keeps Aryna balanced and focused,” says one commentator.
Off the court, the Sabalenkas share a very close relationship built on love and laughter. “We joke around like best friends,” says Aryna. “That’s why she brings me so much joy.”
The sacrifices and dedication of mothers in sport often go unsung. But Aryna Sabalenka’s historic success is a testament to the profound impact her mom Yulia has had. Few player-parent bonds are as powerful or inspiring as theirs.
