Jordan Spieth’s round at the Hero World Challenge on Thursday was one to remember, but for all the wrong reasons for his caddie, Eric Leyendecker. Leyendecker, who is filling in for Spieth’s regular looper Michael Greller, agreed to a bet with Spieth that would have him drink a beer for every birdie Spieth made during the round.
Spieth, known for his hot and cold streaks on the course, had one of his hottest days in recent memory, making six birdies and two eagles. That meant Leyendecker had to consume a whopping 12 beers during the round.
“I was feeling pretty good after the first nine,” Leyendecker said. “I had only had four beers, and Spieth was playing great. But then he just went crazy on the back nine. I was trying to keep up, but I was definitely feeling the effects of the beer by the end of the round.”
As expected, Leyendecker was feeling pretty rough the next morning. He woke up with a pounding headache and a queasy stomach.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever felt this bad in my life,” Leyendecker said. “I’m definitely regretting that beer-per-birdie bet now.”
Despite the hangover, Leyendecker said he wouldn’t change anything about the experience.
“It was definitely a memorable round,” he said. “And I’m glad I got to see Spieth play that well. I just wish I hadn’t had to drink so much beer.”
Spieth finished the round at 8-under par, just two shots off the lead. He is hoping to continue his hot streak and win the tournament.
“I’m feeling good about my game,” Spieth said. “I’m just trying to stay focused and make good decisions on the course.”
If Spieth can keep playing like he did on Thursday, Leyendecker may need to start stocking up on more beer.
