WHO DID MATTEO BERRETTINI REPLACE AT THE 2022 LAVER CUP?
Berrettini filled in for Roger Federer after the Swiss played the last match of his career at Laver Cup. The 41-year-old Federer paired with Rafael Nadal in the doubles, and gave way to the Italian for Saturday’s action. It was a meaningful moment for Berrettini, who idolised Federer as a child.

“I’m not lying when I say that I’m here because of him,” Berrettini said. “He was really the one that I was looking up to. He was the one that I was supporting, cheering for him. I was getting upset, I remember crying after he lost the finals in 2009 in Australia because he was crying.

“So for me, living these moments is something really that means everything.”

WHY DID MATTEO BERRETTINI PULL OUT OF WIMBLEDON IN 2022?
After winning Stuttgart and Queen’s in 2022, Berrettini entered Wimbledon as one of the favourites for the title. However, prior to his first round match, the Italian was forced to withdraw from the tournament after testing positive for COVID-19.

DID MATTEO UNDERGO SURGERY?
Berrettini had surgery on his right hand in spring 2022, forcing him out of the Miami Open. He announced on Thursday, April 7, that he would also be missing Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome. The Italian returned to the tour in early June 2022.

“I spoke to the doctors and they told me, look, I can get really worse, so it’s not worth it to try,” Berrettini told a press conference. “Obviously I’m not 100 percent. To beat these guys, you have to be 100 percent. I think it’s not really professional to step in when you’re not the best.”
