Tennis News Today: Rafael Nadal Receives Support from Carlos Alcaraz Amid Criticism for Saudi Ambassador Role; Chris Evert Pays Tribute to Late American Tennis Coach Andy Brandi

Rafael Nadal has faced criticism in recent days after accepting a role as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia. However, the 22-time Grand Slam champion is receiving support from a fellow Spaniard – rising star Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz came to Nadal’s defense, saying: “Rafa is an example on and off the court. He would never do anything wrong intentionally. If he has accepted that role it will be because he thinks it’s good.”

Critics have hit Nadal for taking the Saudi ambassador position amid the country’s controversial human rights record and treatment of women. Tennis legends like Martina Navratilova have been outspoken against Nadal’s decision.

Meanwhile, tennis legend Chris Evert paid tribute to late American tennis coach Andy Brandi, who recently passed away at 86. Brandi coached Evert early in her career from ages 15-18.

“Andy was such an incredible coach and positive influence in my life,” Evert said. “He gave me solid technique, discipline, and strengthened my mental game. My condolences to his family.”

Under Brandi’s tutelage, Evert rose to prominence and won two Grand Slam titles as a teenager – the 1974 French Open and 1975 Wimbledon. Brandi helped her develop the world-class baseline game that made her an all-time great.

Evert said she will fondly remember Brandi’s guidance, humor, and direct style of communication. The coach’s passing marks the end of an era in American tennis.
