Golf influencer Paige Spiranac has weighed in on PGA Tour player Patrick Reed’s club-tossing outburst last week. During the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open, Reed angrily threw his wedge after a poor bunker shot.
In her podcast ‘Playing A Round,’ Spiranac criticized Reed’s behavior, calling it “so stupid and unnecessary.” She acknowledged all golfers get frustrated, but said Reed took it too far.
“Throwing a club, being dramatic about it, cussing up a storm – there’s no need for it,” Spiranac stated. “You’re on Tour, you’re playing golf for a living. This should be the best time of your life.”
Reed was assessed a two-stroke penalty for intentionally damaging the golf course, compounding his anger issues. Spiranac believes his actions set a poor example for amateurs looking to emulate pros.
“We amateurs we’ll try to copy the pros. So we think ‘oh it’s cool, I can do this now because he’s doing it’, and that’s not okay,” she said.
Known for speaking her mind, Spiranac called on the PGA Tour to fine Reed for his club throw to deter repeat tantrums.
While recognizing Reed has a fiery personality, she wants him to channel it more positively to avoid sinking to new lows. “Use it to pump yourself up, not take yourself down and implode like that,” she suggested.
Spiranac’s candid comments highlight Reed’s fit of peak as unprofessional. With a huge social media following, her view underscores how poor behavior from pros ultimately hurts the game’s image.
