During a press conference, 19-year-old Alcaraz was asked about Nadal’s Saudi role. Alcaraz responded, “It doesn’t seem bad to me. On the contrary, Rafa is a professional in everything he does.”
Nadal’s decision to promote tourism in Saudi Arabia has been blasted by human rights groups. They accuse the Middle Eastern country of “sportswashing” – using high-profile athletes to distract from its poor human rights record.
But Alcaraz argued, “Rafa knows what he is doing. We are professional players and athletes. He values each collaboration he does and decides what is best for him.”
As the newest rising star in tennis, Alcaraz’s supportive words provide respite for Nadal from criticism. With his incredible achievements, Nadal commands huge respect in Spain and globally.
However, Alcaraz’s stance has also drawn some backlash. Critics argue he is young and naive about the serious ethical concerns around Saudi Arabia’s alleged human rights abuses.
